The Surf City Fire Company in New Jersey was temporarily knocked out of service Thursday night when a fire was discovered at their fire station.
A nearby Firefighter heard the station alarm sounding a steady blast indicating the fire alarm system had been activated. He quickly arrived at the station to find it filled with smoke and flames from the apparatus bay area.
The Firefighter called 911, and he and other arriving Firefighters used extinguishers to hold back the fire while the apparatus was pulled out of the building. An attack on the fire was then initiated.
An Investigator from the Ocean County Fire Marshals Office determined the fire was likely caused by malfunctioning electrical equipment.
While the apparatus was saved, it did suffer from smoke damage which placed it out of service. The fire station also suffered significant damage. Area Fire Departments are assisting in providing coverage for emergency responses.
The Department responded to offers of help by saying, “Because our building is out of commission, please send any donations to “Surf City Fire and EMS, c/o Borough of Surf City, 813 Long Beach Blvd. Surf City, NJ 08008. Or you can Venmo us @station49 Thank you for your continued support”.
